Mischief Among the Penguins

There will be some real Mischief Among the Penguins this weekend as I battle to control a large waddle of them in our new Christmas window display. However this will be a mere mini-adventure compared to the antics of our friend H.W. Bill Tilman! H. W. ‘Bill’ Tilman was one of the greatest adventurers of his time, a pioneering climber and sailor who held exploration above all else. He made first ascents throughout the Himalaya, attempted Mount Everest, and sailed into the Arctic Circle. For...

Another successful evening!

On Thursday evening we had a virtually full house to hear Philip Temple talking about the adventurous expedition that he took part in to land on the remote Antarctic Heard Island and then climb its 9,000ft volcano which happens to be the highest peak in Australian Terriory. The yacht was skippered by none other than H. W. Tilman. Vote for Tilman!

The Government are launching a new Polar Research ship in 2019 and is asking for name suggestions. Our friend Richard Wynne who is the publisher of Lodestar Books has suggested H W Tilman and we think it is a brilliant idea. There can be no one more fitting than H W Tilman, the most accomplished High Latitude sailor and explorer of the twentieth century. To vote for the name just click on the link below, then click on the heart. It will only take a few seconds...

We welcome everyone to our events so you don't need to be an expert to join in the fun. Gareth Watkins and Guillaume Danis will do a joint presentation of their seperate voyages. We will then open up to the floor for questions. Ask about Polar Bears, ice conditions, worst moments or whatever comes to mind. It will be an ideal opportunity for...

Pouncer Rounds the North Cape!

I got a fantastic text last night from Charlotte Wilkinson's satellite phone to say that she has safely rounded the North Cape of Norway in her Twister called Pouncer. Charlotte is heading for Archangel to clear Russian customs before sailing to Belamorsk and entering the Russian canal and lake system. If she doesn't get lost she will arrive in St Peterburg about three weeks later (the visa expires after a month!). Pouncer will then head for her home port of Umea...
